Mighty Marvel VHS! Part 4

Title: DRACULA (AKA DRACULA: Sovereign Of The Damned)
Original Japanese Title: Yami no Teiō: Kyūketsuki Dracula (Dracula: The Vampire Emperor of Darkness)

Manufacturer:  Vestron

Date: 1984

For years, I didn't know that this was actually a somewhat loose adaptation of Marvel's classic 1970s TOMB OF DRACULA.  I can remember seeing this on rental shelves as a kid and passing it up.   I think I may have seen a "trailer" (i.e., VHS release promo) for it tacked on the end of some kiddie VHS release way back in the 80s (for some odd reason a KIDSTUFF release of HEATHCLIFF: THE MOVIE comes to mind).

All I do know now is that this particular VHS is a real pain to find copies of.  If I understand the release history right, the anime was produced in Japan, aired on Japanese TV, then got shipped and dubbed into English for the U.S. home video market.  It gets a VHS release here in the States in this dubbed form, yet never receieves a home video release in Japan (and still hasn't yet, to my knowledge).  Then, it goes out of print on VHS practically as soon as it was released ( a common practice amongst low budget distributors during the era: produce enough units to fulfill intitial sales orders, then move onto the next release), and never gets a format upgrade to DVD or Blu-Ray.

Now, I was HUGE fan of the Marvel Comics, especially of one of the spin-off characters from the book that took off in a big way cinematically at the beginning of the last decade....Blade: Vampire Hunter...

Needless to say, they changed up his look somewhat for the films...
