Superman: Goodtimes Double Feature (1986)
This is probably one of my favorite Superman/Fleischer Bros. shorts related VHS cassettes I have ever owned. I purchased this at my hometown wal-Mart circa 1992 or so, and it has followed me through the various ups and down, moves, and just general nonsense that has passed as a life I've led.
One of the reasons why this is a favorite is because of the non-animated material that it contains, which is one of the few times I've ever seen the public domain promotional short "Stamp Day for Superman" ever released in the VHS format. As much as I am a fan of these classic animated short subjects, I absolutely love the 1950s television series which starred the late George Reeves. So much so that during my college years of the early 1990s, I spent 3 or so months of late, sleepless nights recording the entire run of the series from cable TV (this was during the period when the Nickelodeon Channel wasn't the 24 hour "SpongeBob Squarepants" and "Monkees rip-off directed towards the 'tween demographic" Network and their "Nick At Nite" latenight programming block had the exclusive syndicated broadcast rights to the show). So, owning a copy of the promo short, whcih was never included in any of the broadcast syndication packages, was a personal coup for yours truly...
Sadly, my copy of the VHS is suffering from a slow and heavy magnetic death....full of tracking lines brought on from 20 plus years of repetitive viewings and the slow decay of the magnetic tape components. An attempted transfer led to this discovery...the tape is watchable, and did lead me to be able to garner the info needed for a summery of the tape's contents, though. Which has inspired me to do the Metroplis Video Store's first digital reconstruction...
The quality of the transfer on the original VHS was questionable, as well. I can remember my first viewing of the tape led me to be disappointed for a few minutes because it actually contains the first few minutes of the classic THREE STOOGES short, "Disorder in the Court", which then stops (with those classic tell-tale signs of a VHS overdub..the wavy image and static sounds) and cuts into the Superman material.
Using various source material: A classic GOODTIMES logo pulled from their VHS release from around the same period of this cassette's production of the 1943 BATMAN serial, and video files of the Superman shorts and the live-action promo acquired from our friends at the INTERNET ARCHIVE, and use of AnyVideoConverter, I've been able to reconstruct and present this VHS as it was probably originally intended to be presented, while keeping with the actually contents of the cassette itself.
I've even burned the compilation to DVD+R, and am currently figuring out a way to reverse engineer the content of the disc so that I can record it onto a VHS. Crazy, I know, but worth it for me asetically. I've included in this post the DVD cover I created for my disc, which I re-edited from the original box-art I've scanned (below).
