And, now....a completely DIFFERENT kind of MARVEL....

One show that I absolutely loved as a child was the 1981 Filmation take on the Captain Marvel Family, the animated SHAZAM!.   It's corny and goofy, but going back and watching it now, you realize that it's a pretty straight adaptation of the goofy and corny Golden Age incarnation of the classic Fawcett characters (now owned by DC).  I can remember purchasing these tapes at a now defunct Big Wheel store located in Georgetown, Ohio (anybody remember that retail chain?) around the winter of 1993 or so for about a .99 apiece (the store was liquidating it's stock and going out of business).  Over the last 20 years, I've got more than my 2 dollars worth of enjoyment out of the material on these cassettes.

I just wish that the licensing situation was clearer on this particular show than it seems to be, seeing as how I think this falls in with the home video distribution rights to the Filmation catalog, and not with DC Comics (read: Warner Bros.) proper, making any further attempts at home video releases (DVDs and Blu-Rays) troublesome.

We're Still Alive!

After a few months of away, I've decided to refocus the direction of the blog.   Not only will we continue our original purpose, the preservation of the Fleischer Bros. SUPERMAN VHS viewing experience, but will also showcase superhero/ comic book/comic strip themed VHS releases of all shapes and sizes.  Whenever it's not an issue of copyright infringement (i.e., public domain material), we'll continue to offer downloads of the content of the tapes we feature.

Basically, I just got bored with the dry spell I've had in recent months of finding new and different public domain SUPERMAN VHS and DVD releases, and decided to shake thing up a little bit....

SUPERMAN THE MOVIE (1979 WCI VHS)

Went to local fleamarket yesterday, found a copy of the WCI Home Video release of SUPERMAN THE MOVIE. WCI would later evolve into Warner Home Video....this is the first home video release of the flick (from 1979...a thirty-five year old VHS cassette.......weird). Kinda rare (finding VHS cassettes prior to 1983 these days is getting harder and harder), and infamous amongst fans of the film because of the cuts made to runtime... I bought it for a dollar.....

In 1979, WCI Home Video (now Warner Home Video) issued Superman on VHS, Betamax and Laserdisc. However, only for the VHS and Betamax releases, the film was truncated to a length of 127 minutes by way of time compression (from an original theatrical runtime of 143 mins.), as most scenes without dialogue were sped up, and a majority of the film's closing credits were deleted, instead replacing them with a truncated version consisting of the copyright notice, and a chyron of the credits taken from an 8mm release of selected scenes from the film. This time compression was necessary because of the technological limitations of videocassettes at the time and the unavailability of long-playing cassettes. The film would not be available in an uncompressed form until 1983, when Warner Bros. finally issued such a version on home video. This version was re-released to video in 1986. Another Laserdisc set of the film was released in 1990, which was color-corrected and in widescreen format, and in its original theatrical version.
