The Mystery of Secret Agent in Black and White

I've owned the below VHS release for nearly 23 years (purchased at Greene's Department Store located in West Union, Ohio at some point during the summer of 1989), and one thing about it has always baffled me...

The technical info on this VHS is this:  It was manufactured by Trans-Atlantic Video in 1988 and it's part number is #13019.  What makes it such an oddity is that it contains a transafer of the short "Secret Agent" (probably one of my favorites of the 17 Fleischer/ Famous shorts) that's in black and white instead of the normal color version, with weird, seemingly homemade title cards at the beginning of the short.  My theory for years has been that this transfer was taken from either a 16mm or Super8 reel made for retail distribution.  Anyone out there hve any info on it?

Superman: The Man of Steel (Horizon Entertainment- 70010, 1994)

Title: Superman: The Man of Steel

Manufacturer:  Horizon Entertainment

Part #: 70010

Date: 1994

Love the box art for this release, nice Curt Swan art swipe for the front.  Release supposedly contains the following titles:

Superman
Billion Dollar Limited
Artic Giant

Superman Vol. 2 Kid Video (Hep Cat Entertainment 1989)

Title: Superman Vol. 2 (Kid Video)

Manufacturer:  Hep Cat Entertainment

Date: 1989

This release supposedly contains the following shorts:
Magnetic Telescope
Jungle Drums
Superman
The Mummy Strikes

This is unconfirmed, though, because the quality of the Metropolis Video Store's copy of the cassette is so poor that a decent digital transfer could not be made.  Anyone possessing said VHS release should feel free to contact us to verify the shorts contained on the cassette, as well as anyone who might be helpful enough provide a digital video file of the cassette's contents.

Welcome to the Metropolis Video Store

Welcome to the Metropolis Video Store, a site dedicated to archiving any and all public domain VHS releases of the early 1940s Fleischer Bros/ Famous Studios animated Superman shorts.  Looking for cover scans and digital video files of said releases.  Feel free to contact the site via e-mail for info on submitting your scans/files.

Contact: metropolisvideo@live.com

Be sure to check back here at the Metropolis Video Store to see how you can connect with us on Facebook and Twitter in the future.

Why we do what we do:

The Metropolis Video Store's webmaster, Anthony Wayne Conn, is a comic book historian and enthusiast whose geek-cred stretches back over three decades.  He's written film and DVD reviews for several genre-related websites, and has collected and read funnybooks since the ripe old age of five, circa 1979.  He fell in love with the Fleischer Bros./Famous Studios Superman animated shorts of the 1940s after he discovered them during his teen years, through Gary Grossman's book, Superman: Serial to Cereal and the numerous VHS releases manufactured by distributors who capitialized on the fact that the shorts exist in the public domain rights and licensing-wise, a practice that continues to this day in the DVD format.

The Metropolis Video Store is an effort to preserve this viewing experience, specifically the VHS viewing experience, which for nearly two decades was practically the only way one could be exposed to these classic cartoons. We have a large collection of these cheap VHS format releases, and plan on archiving and sharing box art scans, and if possible in the near future, make available for download digital video files of the contents of said tapes.

Any feedback or comments are welcome.  Feel free to contact the site via e-mail at metropolisvideo@live.com
